Video: Hiking and Biking in China’s Four Sisters Mountains
This Solo Trip Revealed an Area Changing Rapidly Since the Introduction of Mountain Adventure Tourism
This summer I ventured off solo and explored this stunning region of Western Sichuan by bike. I spent a few days in the small, developing town of Siguniang Shan and hiked 26km along Haizi valley, where I saw stunning views of the Four Sisters peaks. The Four Sisters are the biggest mountains in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture.
At 200km from Chengdu with peaks over 6000m, they are the closest high mountains to a major megacity in China. This makes them an appealing location for mountain adventure tourism, which has transformed the area. The government is using tourism programs to alleviate rural poverty, and as an incentive to protect local ecosystems.
