你好! We’re Tamzin and Joe. We lived in Chéngdū for five years with our two locally-adopted street dogs, 馍馍 MóMo (Steamed Bun) and 秋秋QiūQiū (Autumn). We are currently living on a narrowboat in the UK.
We started this newsletter after watching Cop26 online from Chéngdū. We were frustrated with western politicians and journalists frequently referring to China as a ‘climate villain’, all the while shirking their own climate responsibilities. We found that while discussing climate change, too often ‘China’ is evoked not as a real place but as a rhetorical device, drawing on deep wells of Cold War paranoia and postcolonial anxiety.
The adventures in this newsletter seek out stories, insights and solutions to the challenges we face as a species. They touch on climate change, environmental projects, Chinese culture and life in Chéngdū with our dogs. With hearts and minds open to the kindness and ingenuity of the people we meet, we hope to bring a perspective on China you can’t find in mainstream media.
